Membership Information

 

If you are on active duty today, serving honorably, anywhere in the world, or have served honorably during any eligible war eras, you can become a member of The American Legion!

We're veterans just like you, nearly 3 million strong, who care about America, veterans and their families and our nation's youth. The Legion is a powerful voice in Washington dedicated to preserving the rights we've all earned - and were promised - by service to our nation in uniform.

We invite you to join us now. Membership brings an impressive array of benefits. The American Legion is always there for you and your family. Just like you, we're "Still Serving America!"

If you are eligible for membership and would like to join the American Legion or one of our family organizations please request an application from a member or at the Post.
 

Requirements to Join

 
New Membership
Eligible veterans applying for first time membership must submit the following information to Post Membership Committee:
1. A completed American Legion Membership application.
2. A copy of your DD214 or discharge.
3. Membership Dues Payment. Dues. (Amount Shown on Application). Make checks payable to American Legion Post 586.
4. If the information is correct, membership will be approved and then a membership card will be mailed to you.
5. Please see eligibility dates below.
 
Transfers
Veterans applying for transfers from your current Post to Post 586 must submit the following:
1. Completed Member Data Card
2. Copy of your DD214 or discharge
3. Copy of Current Membership Card
4. Membership dues payment, if current year dues are not paid. If current dues are paid, please pay dues for next year's membership.
 

Eligibility

 
American Legion
If you are on active duty today, anywhere in the world, or have served during any eligible war eras, you are a veteran and you're eligible to become a member of the American Legion.
 
American Legion Auxilary

To be eligible to join the The American Legion Auxiliary if you are a woman who is eligible for membership in The American Legion.

You would also be eligible if you are the mother, wife, daughter, sister, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, or grandmother of members of The American Legion, and deceased veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces during the listed war periods.

Step relatives are also eligible.
Are you under the age of 18? You can join as a Junior member.

 
Sons of the American Legion

To be eligible to join the Sons of The American Legion, you must be a male descendant (includes stepsons and adopted sons) of a member of The American Legion.

You would also be eligible if you are the male descendant (stepsons and adopted sons included) of a veteran who died in service during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, or the Persian Gulf War.

You would also be eligible to join if you are the male descendant (stepsons and adopted sons included) of a veteran who died subsequent to his or her honorable discharge from service in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, or the Persian Gulf War.

 

Eligibility Dates

 

Membership Eligibility in the American Legion is based on honorable service with the U. S. Armed Forces between:

(April 6, 1917 -November 11, 1918) World War I
(December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946) World War II
(June 25, 1950 - January 31, 1955) Korean War
(February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975) Vietnam War
(August 24, 1982 - July 31,1984) Lebanon/Grenada
(December 20, 1989 - January 31, 1990) Operation Just Cause
(August 2, 1990 - Present)* Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm

* Because eligibility dates remain open, all members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.

You must have served at least one day of active military duty during one of the dates above and honorably discharged or still serving honorably.
